Acid phosphatase is a ubiquitous lysosomal enzyme that hydrolyses organic phosphates at an acid pH. Acid phosphatases are a group of five ubiquitous tissue isoenzymes that hydrolyze organic monophosphate esters. They are present in many human tissues including platelets, lung, osteoclasts, erythrocytes, liver, and kidney. However, prostate-specific acid phosphatase is over 100 times more abundant in the prostate than in other tissue types. In clinical chemistry the measurement of acid phosphatase is used almost exclusively in the diagnosis and control of therapy of prostatic carcinoma. In hematological disorders, bones or liver diseases as well as in Paget
